Rishi's Numerical Plan Is Not Going To Calculate

As everyone knows, Rishi Sunak in his infinite wisdom has announced that all students will have to study Maths in some form until they are eighteen, a practice that has been compulsory in many countries for many years but has missed Great Britain for a myriad of reasons.

This statement comes merely days before it was announced that Great Yarmouth is the least educated area in England using data gathered from the 2021 census.

Of course, Maths is very important and as someone who did not attend university mostly due to poor grades caused by Dyscalculia, I am quite aware of the difficulties caused by the lack of a proper maths qualification.

However, what Rishi is failing to consider is that there are many factors responsible for the lack of students studying Maths, one of which is that every year the government fails to meet its quota for newly qualified maths teachers. In fact, statistics show that the government has missed its target for teacher recruitment for seven of the past eight years!

Also, there has been a severe lack of funding in the public school system (not so much in the private system) which combined with the disruption caused by Covid means that schools are struggling to support those students who have fallen behind, not to mention underpaid and exhausted teachers who are resorting to using food banks to survive.

Maybe if Rishi really believes that giving every child “the highest possible standard of education” is “the single most important reason why I came into politics”, maybe he could help by actually supporting the educators and students struggling to survive in this ever-dwindling economy?

Just a suggestion of course. I am sure he has more ‘important’ things to think about such as stopping Boris Johnson from attempting to make yet another comeback, not that he really ever went away though.
